Deciphering western Mediterranean kinematics using metamorphic porphyroblasts from the Alpujárride Complex (Betic Cordillera)

چکیده

3D microstructural analysis of porphyroblast inclusion trails using X-ray Computed Tomography is integrated with field structures to unravel the Alpine deformation history Alpujárride Complex, which constitutes partially submerged metamorphic core Gibraltar Arc. Prograde metamorphism in complex has been traditionally linked a 'D1' event witnessed by garnet porphyroblasts. Orientation data for these microstructures reveal three age groups differently oriented axes inclusion-trail curvature (known as FIA). The successive development FIAs trending WNW-ESE, ENE-WSW and NNW-SSE shown correlated Paleogene-Neogene relative plate-motion paths Africa, Iberia Alborán Domain known from paleomagnetic data. During late-metamorphic evolution after growth had ceased, two steeply dipping crenulation cleavages associated folds roughly suborthogonal N–S E-W trends developed, addition subhorizontal ones. Inclusion are also found exhibit general preference subvertical orientations, suggesting protracted orogenic characterized multiple stress permutations causing alternations crustal shortening gravitational collapse.

Exhumation of high-pressure metapelites and coeval crustal extension in the Alpujarride complex (Betic Cordillera)

The current configuration of the Alpujarride complex (Befic Orogen) comprises a stack of thinned tectonic units, made up mainly of continental crest. P T path modelling in different levels of an Alpujarride unit (the Salobrefia tectonic unit) reveals a high-pressure metamorphic stage followed by subsequent decompression at nearly isothermal conditions. Nevertheless, the P T conditions differ fr...

Timing of tectonic events in the Alpujárride Complex, Betic Cordillera, southern Spain

Ar–Ar and fission-track dating from four low-grade sections in the Alpujárride Complex sheds light on the timing of the early contractional history of these high-pressure metamorphic units, and their subsequent exhumation during the early Miocene extensional collapse of the Betic orogen. White mica grains from the lowest-grade rocks yield partly reset detrital Ar–Ar ages; where deformation and ...

Lower-middle Eocene benthic foraminifera from the Fortuna Section (Betic Cordillera, southeastern Spain)

Benthic foraminifera were studied as part of an investigation of the Fortuna Section (Betic Cordillera, Southeastern Spain), undertaken to document a candidate section for the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Lutetian Stage (Ypresian/Lutetian boundary). Benthic foraminiferal assemblages in this section are mostly dominated by calcareous taxa (~50-96%) and by infaun...

Paleotopography in the Western U.s. Cordillera

introduction Issue #2 of Volume 312 of the American Journal of Science brings together several new papers bearing on the history of orogenesis, paleotopography, and paleoclimate in a region whose geologic record has been more important to the modern development of ideas about these processes than any other in the world: the American Cordillera of the western U.S. Here, a conspiracy of lithosphe...

Tectonically driven landscape development within the eastern Alpujarran Corridor, Betic Cordillera, SE Spain (Almerı́a)

The Betic Cordillera is a topographic manifestation of Miocene to recent collision between the African and the European plates. Mountain ranges in the Internal Zone of the Betic Cordillera are exhumed massifs of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, and are surrounded by low-lying sedimentary basins. The Neogene history of mountain range uplift and basin formation in the Betics is well studied, bu...
